Originally, the Kattengat was a narrow canal in a V-shape that ran from the Nieuwezijds Achterburgwal (now Spuistraat) to the Singel in two parts. In the second half of the 19th century, the canal was filled in. The left leg of the V is called Koggestraat since October 2, 1873. The Kogge was a very old seagoing cargo ship, which also appeared on the Dutch and 'Zeeuwse' inland waterways. It is possible that the Kogge originated at the beginning of the 12th century, or simultaneously with the practically identical table ship.To the north of the street is the Koepelkerk, a former Round Lutheran Church that has been part of the Renaissance Hotel since 1975.
